The Minister of Sports and Youth Development, Solomon Dalung has on Monday reacted to call by many Nigerians that National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) should be scrapped as he has gone on a tour to the NYSC camp in Kubwa, Abuja and said anyone calling for scrapping of the programme is short sighted.
Dalung noted that anybody who said NYSC should be scrapped is short sighted and also described the calls for scrapping of NYSC as sheer beer parlor talk.
While addressing the 2016 Batch ‘B’ Youth Corps members posted to the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), on Monday, at the Permanent Orientation Camp in Kubwa, he called on the youth corpers not to believe the “beer parlour gossips that Buhari was about to scrap the scheme.
In his words, ”I took out time today to diligently do the step by step inspection of facilities, the kind of food served to the corps members, the medical facilities available, the drugs made available to them and also the quality of the service in that regard, their hostels and also the kind of beds provided, their sanitary environment and all that involves their well being.
”It was an exercise that has sufficiently equipped me with first knowledge different from a 2nd or 3rd party information. I have noted areas of genuine concerns and we shall treat them with the immediate priority which they deserves.
”The NYSC ranks high in the priority of President Muhammadu Buhari, therefore, the present administration is taking steps to improve the scheme because the programme is so dear to the President.”
Dalung also submitted that the NYSC scheme had grown to become the backbone of Nigeria’s national unity, adding that “it has also created and fostered progressive relationships among youths from diverse cultures across the country that cannot be taken for granted.”
