100 killed, 200 injured in road crashes in Kebbi

....
.... The Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) in Kebbi state said on Friday that over 100 deaths were recorded from road crashes in the state between January and October, 2016. The Sector Commander of the commission in the state, Mr James Mbatse, disclosed this at a Road Safety Sensitization Campaign for commercial drivers and road users in Birnin Kebbi. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the campaign was organised by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) Community Development Service Group of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC). Mbatse said that the deaths were recorded from 70 fatal road accidents in the state during the period, adding that over 200 people injured in the incidents were currently receiving treatment in hospitals across the state. The sector commander, who was represented by the command’s Public Relations Officer, Malam Lawal Gotomo, urged motorists to avoid driving under the influence of alcohol or intoxicants. “For the sake of your lives and fellow beings, you should avoid making or receiving phone calls while driving,” he also said. The President of NEMA CDS group, Mr Kingsley Nzekwe, urged motorists to obey traffic rules in order to minimise the rate of accidents on the highways. He emphasised the need for officials of the corps and NURTW to sustain the campaign in order to reduce the loss of lives and property. Nzekwe said that the aim of the campaign was to educate drivers on the need to observe safety while driving. A cross section of the motorists who participated in the campaign, commended the group for organising the event. They said that if sustained, the campaign would reduce the rate of accidents on highways to the nearest minimum.
